Basic Call Sign Pronunciation

Call signs are identifiers for aircraft, consisting of letters and numbers.

Pronunciation Rules

  • Letters: A (Alpha), B (Bravo), C (Charlie), D (Delta), E (Echo), F (Foxtrot), G (Golf), H (Hotel), I (India), J (Juliet), K (Kilo), L (Lima), M (Mike), N (November), O (Oscar), P (Papa), Q (Quebec), R (Romeo), S (Sierra), T (Tango), U (Uniform), V (Victor), W (Whiskey), X (X-ray), Y (Yankee), Z (Zulu)
  • Numbers: 3 (Tree), 9 (Niner); numbers in call signs are grouped in pairs

    Usage Instructions

    General

    - General Aviation Callsigns: click the "General Aviation Callsigns" button to play simulated traffic (aircraft type + callsign). Practice identifying and transcribing only the callsign.

    - 4-digit Number Practice: click the "4-digit Number Practice" button to play four-digit number groups for numeric reading practice.

    - Letter Practice: click "English Letter Practice" to practice letter dictation; customize the letter set and length in "More Options".

    Tips

    • Use "More Options" to adjust speed, accent, counts per group, and custom letters.
    • Enabling "Simulate VHF/ATC Tone" will make playback sound closer to real VHF AM radio (may add short processing latency).
    • Controls: Enter=Check Answer, Space=Replay/Pause/Resume, R=Regenerate, H=Show/Hide Answer.
